10 Things to Do in Duluth, Georgia
Hello! This is Tim Trevathan of Tim Trevathan Homes and Keller Williams Realty. Today, we are going to talk about 10 things to do in Duluth, Georgia. If you live in, or near, Duluth, you do not have to travel far from home to find a wide array of family-friendly activities. Let’s get started!
- Southeastern Railway Museum. This museum is perhaps one of Duluth’s best hidden treasures. From the road it doesn’t look like much, but this well-maintained 35-acre site is home to around 90 antique locomotives, cabooses, passenger cars, baggage cars, and other train memorabilia. The best part? The museum is very interactive and most of the rail cars invite you to hop on in and explore, making it a hit with kids and kids-at-heart alike.
Weather permitting, admission includes a short train ride on an antique train.
- Chattahoochee River Tubing. This is a great way to beat the summer heat! Park your vehicle at Chattahoochee River Tubing’s office in Duluth, take a short shuttle ride to the river, and then enjoy a 3-4 hour, 4-mile relaxing ride down the river. There are no rapids and children as young as 5 years old are welcome. The water is a chilly 50 F, but that cold water feels so refreshing when it is HOT outside.
Tubes and kayaks are available for rent, or you may bring your own dual-chamber tube.
- Eddie Owen Presents at Red Clay Music Foundry. If you love live music, particularly if you love hearing songwriters sing their own music, a trip to Eddie Owen Presents at Red Clay Music Foundry in Downtown Duluth is a must. This live music venue is family friendly and provides a great atmosphere to kick back and relax while listening to some great music. Snacks are available, and you may also bring in your own food.
- Eye Candy Art Studio. Also located in Downtown Duluth, stop into Eye Candy Art Studio for a fun afternoon or evening painting some pottery. Walk-ins are welcome for pottery painting, but they do recommend making a reservation if you are planning to come with a group of 6 or more. If you’d rather paint a canvas, both youth and adult classes are available.
- Atlanta Ice Forum. Something you don’t find just anywhere down here in the South is ice rinks. The Atlanta Ice Forum is a professional quality ice rink offering all sorts of skating fun. Do you know how to play hockey? Join the adult hockey league! Do you have a child who wants to learn? They can join the youth hockey team. Or, if figure skating is your child’s dream, private lessons are offered and the Atlanta Ice Forum is part of the Georgia Figure Skating Club. But Tim, you might be thinking, my kids just want to have fun – not play hockey or figure skate. Well, the Atlanta Ice Forum has you covered! They offer public ice sessions each day. Go rent a pair of skates and enjoy some fun family time.
- Hudgens Center for Art and Learning. Dedicated to “spreading the love of art”, the Hudgens Center for Art and Learning offers a wide variety of youth and adult art classes. For example, I peeked at their summer schedule and this summer, 2022, they are offering classes on acrylic painting, calligraphy, drawing, pottery, and soap making just to name a few.
This is a great place to keep in mind if you’ve been wanting to learn something new, or to improve existing skills. They also offer summer camps for kids, a quarterly family day with free admission and fun activities, and free monthly workshops for military veterans as well as cancer patients and their caregivers.
- McDaniel Farm Park. One of the coolest parks in Duluth, McDaniel Farm Park is both a park and history museum rolled into one great place. This former cotton farm was actually owned by the McDaniel family for more than 100 years. Parts of it have been restored to resemble a typical Gwinnett County farm from the 1930’s, back when, believe it or not, Gwinnett was very rural.
Visitors can see the original barn and outbuildings, and a restored tenant farmhouse. Tours are available free of charge Tuesday – Saturday and tours also include a tour of the furnished original farmhouse.
There is also a large playground, paved and non-paved trails, and a large pavilion. McDaniel Farm Park is the perfect place to soak up local history, enjoy a beautiful day, or get some exercise.
- Gas South Arena. This is where you’ll want to be if you want to catch an Atlanta Gladiator’s hockey game or a Georgia Swarm lacrosse game. The Gas South Arena also hosts a multitude of live performances throughout the year from concerts to classical ballets. The Gladiator’s are an East Coast Hocky League team, and games are very family friendly. Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in America. All Georgia Swarm games are on the weekend, making them easy for busy fans to attend.
Later this year, Michael Bublé will take the stage and dazzle with his wonderful vocals. For something completely different, Monster Jam will be bringing it’s roar and energy to Gas South later this year as well.
Big names who have performed here in the past include the Jonas Brothers, Toby Mac, Sugarland, Paul McCartney, Pentatonix, Smashing Pumpkins, and Hall & Oates.
- Virtual Reality. It’s not for everyone, but if virtual reality is your thing, then you will want to plan a visit to iSimu VR. This virtual reality arcade offers over 40 games to choose from. Want to play with friends? No problem! You can walk-in, but reserving your preferred time slot online is recommended.
- West Gwinnett Park Aquatic Center. Another great way to stay active and beat the summer heat, the aquatic center has an outdoor pool, slides, and a lazy river that are open during the summer season. Year round, the two indoor pools are open for lap swimming, swim lessons, and water aerobics. Currently, reservations must be made online in order to ensure guests have the ability to maintain social distance.
There is certainly no shortage of things to do in Duluth, Georgia. You can paint pottery, watch a hocky game, tube down the Chattahoochee, enjoy history at the McDaniel Farm Park, play a virtual reality game or more. I hope you find time to check out all Duluth has to offer soon!
