10 Things To Do in Johns Creek

Hello! This is Tim Trevethan with Keller Williams Realty and Tim Trevethan Homes. Today we are going to talk about things do to in Johns Creek, Georgia. There is no shortage of things to keep you busy in Johns Creek. From parks to the Chattahoochee River to art lessons to golf to a professional orchestra, there you will certainly not be bored in Johns Creek.

  1. Autrey Mill Nature Preserve & Heritage Center. Hidden in plain sight, the Autrey Mill Nature Preserve & Heritage Center is one of Johns Creeks’ hidden gems. This 46-acre nature preserve is home to 3 miles of walking trails and more. The farm museum gives children the chance to meet and learn about over 30 different animals; from traditional farm animals like chickens to more exotic animals like snakes and lizards.

On the trails, a cell phone audio tour provides visitors with information on the history of the preserve and its historic buildings, as well as some of the native plants and habitats you pass through on your walk.

There are several historic buildings preserved in the heritage village. The exterior of these buildings may be toured at any time the preserve is open, but the interior is only open upon special request or during specific events.

Admission to the Autrey Mill Nature Preserve & Heritage Center is free, though a donation is appreciated.

  • Golf. Gold is an option for everyone in Johns Creek! The Atlanta Athletic Club is an exclusive, members-only club that has hosted several PGA events. Country Club of the South, St. Ives, and The Standard Club are other exclusive members-only country clubs in Johns Creek.

The golf-only Rivermont Golf Club is an affordable private option, with a full membership costing less than $500 a year. However, there are often waiting lists for all levels of membership at this fantastic club. It was ranked one of the Top 20 courses in Georgia in 2018!

The public River Pines golf course consistently earns rave reviews. Be sure to book your tee time early if you are hoping to play a round of golf on the weekend or after work on a beautiful day. River Pines offers lessons for both adults and children, and also hosts a Junior PGA program.

  • Newtown Park Amphitheater. Located inside Newtown Park, the Mark Burkhalter Amphitheater hosts events sponsored by the city of Johns Creek, including the popular summer concert series. Grab some friends, bring your lawn chair, choose your spot on the green lawn, and enjoy a warm summer evening of good music in the company of good friends. During the summer concert series, the city partners with various food trucks and has alcoholic beverages available for purchase. Best of all? The summer concerts are free! The amphitheater is also home to other city sponsored events throughout the year.
  • Newtown Park. The rest of Newtown Park is also worth a visit. If you have a dog, you’ll definitely want to visit the one-acre dog park. This great dog park has separate areas for large and small dogs in an effort to keep its visitors safe and having fun. The park also has artificial turf and offers a variety of obstacles for your pup’s enjoyment. In the summer, there are sprinklers too so your dog can keep cool while enjoying the park.

Newtown Park also is home to a community garden with 41 plots that can be rented by any Johns Creek resident. This is a great way to garden if your own yard is not garden friendly, or you want to make friends while tending to your crop.

The park is also home to a fun playground and an active senior center that hosts regular events for the community’s senior citizens. There is also the 5-acre Veterans Memorial Walk maintained by the Johns Creek Veterans Association, that pays remembrance and respect to those who serve and have served our country.

  • The Johns Creek Tunnel. This unique city-sponsored art installation was painted by Hanif Kureshi in 2018 and celebrates the unity of the city’s diverse community all while telling the story of where the city came from in its past and where it is headed in the future.  Admission is free, and the mural spans the length of the pedestrian underpass that crosses Medlock Bridge Road in the heart of Johns Creek.
  • Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra. The Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra bills itself as “Metro Atlanta’s only fully professional, part-time symphonic orchestra”. The orchestra brings performances to the Johns Creek community that rival those of any professional orchestra in the country. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is wonderful, but there is no need to make the trip downtown when you have the Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra just down the road!
  • The Chattahoochee River. The river is accessible through 5 units of the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area that are located either in or just outside of Johns Creek. Four of these units have a boat ramp, picnic areas, and trails. Fishing is allowed (no night fishing) and many avid anglers find the Chattahoochee to offer fantastic trout fishing.

Tubing and kayaking are also popular river activities. Do be sure to check the Army Corps of Engineers water release schedule before your visit. Releases happen most weekday afternoons from the dam at Lake Lanier and can result in sudden, dangerous changes in the water level and river currents.

  • Johns Creek Art Center. The Johns Creek Arts Center desires to provide quality art education that is affordable and accessible to the community. Classes are offered for adults and children in on a large variety of subjects: drawing, painting, ceramics, jewelry making, sewing, guitar, and more. The arts center also hosts a rotating art exhibit featuring art by students and community members. Admission is free, but tours must be scheduled in advance due to Covid protocols.
  • A&S Culinary Concepts. Let this locally owned business help you up your cooking game. Public cooking classes are offered, or you can arrange a private cooking class for your family, friends, or organization. If you have a a budding chef in your family, perhaps a cooking class birthday party would be just the thing to bring a smile to their face! If you don’t want to learn how to cook and would rather just eat, order one of their delicious pre-made meals and pick it up for a delicious dinner.
  1. Six Bridges Brewing. Six Bridges is a father-son owned venture and is the only brewery in Johns Creek, has earned its reputation as a place to relax and enjoy a great beverage in a great atmosphere. The taproom is open Tuesday – Sunday and has a active weekly calendar including Tuesday trivia and Wednesday cornhole. Food trucks are on-site Tuesday nights and on the weekends. The tap room is family friendly and welcomes guests under 21 (absolutely no tasting of alcoholic beverages!) and even welcomes your dog!
